Down by law
Desperate to be allowed out of solitary confinement, broken after long torture, David Hicks pleads guilty to "whatever you've got".Hicks fought in a war against the United States. He would, given the chance, have killed its troops. I do not say that he should not face trial and possibly punishment for that. I do say that he has not been afforded a fair trial, and he has already been sufficiently punished for his two hours at the front, during which time he did not fire on the US troops, who were, one might remind oneself, engaged in aggressive action against another nation.
If our government had balls, or any notion whatsoever of justice, or any approach to the "war on terror" other than mindless moral panic, it would immediately free Hicks the minute he touched down in Australia. Sadly, we are governed by a small man with a complex, and that won't be happening.
