Rochefoucauld

Lessing than zero

I am just so glad that the Nobel committee have maintained their longstanding commitment to rewarding the worthy but dull. There's none worthier or duller than Doris Lessing, who I strongly suspect would be a shoo-in for a prize for the writer most read but least finished.

But of course she has been rewarded for her politics, not for her writing, just as, one suspects, Al Gore will be rewarded for his message, not for his contribution to peace.

I don't think I've ever read a word she's written. I take it from this there's no need starting now?

Harold Bloom: "This is pure political correctness. Although Ms. Lessing at the beginning of her writing career had a few admirable qualities, I find her work for the past 15 years quite unreadable ... fourth-rate science fiction."
