Sons of Sharon

Who wants peace in the Middle East?

Not the US and not Israel.

Yet again, they refuse even to think about peace. Why would they? War is working for them. The stuff about the Quartet demands is just blather. Israel doesn't meet the Quartet's criteria for negotiation itself, and has no intention of doing so. I've noted before that there is a real problem with Hamas, but that should not blind us to the truth that Israel has no desire for an equitable peace (and in truth never has had). Ferociously disappointed that the Palestinian factions were able to patch up their differences, Israel and the US have found the perfect way to slap the Arabs in the face: instead of giving the new coalition time to work out its programme and seeing whether the partnership led to a moderation of Hamas, they have made it clear that they do not want to discuss anything with anybody. While Israel continues to elect hardmen leaders with an ultraZionist agenda, that's not going to change. It's a bad thing that the Palestinians elected Hamas; but it's equally bad that Israel empowered Sharon and the sons of Sharon.

I don't fully understand why it is Israel and the U.S. who get pilloried for not wanting peace, while the Hamas portion of the coalition still refuses to recognize Israel or renounce the instigation of violence.

I do understand that it would not necessarily hurt for the Quartet to go ahead with this and hope that Hamas comes around. Personally I would prefer that approach. The Arab street is very reactive, and just the appearance of shifting the goal posts, even if created by media spin, becomes a negative. But still.

Okay, add politics to economics on your list of things you are not permitted to comment on here until you have a clue.

Hamas declared a truce -- a hudna, something the Israelis have yet to do. This is not a "renunciation of violence", but it's an end to violence. Why should they renounce violence when there are Israeli troops on even the small amount of their homeland that they are to be permitted? Hamas has also recognised Israel, just not formally. They have said they accept that Israel will exist. It's just too much that they should agree that Israel has a right to be in Palestine.

Why are Israel and the US pilloried? Because Israel and the US have zero interest in peace. Israel realises it can continue its expansion progress without let while the US supports it. It will present the Palestinians with a fait accompli, withdrawing from their bantustans and sitting behind their concrete curtain. Hamas wants peace. It wants to end the conflict. Yes, it would destroy Israel if it could. But it can't, knows it and wants to end the conflict. It's hurting the Palestinians way more than it is the Israelis.
