How green was my Porritt?

When those who speak truth to power become part of the structure of power or gain access to it, as Jonathan Porritt has in becoming an adviser to the UK government, something happens. The principles are binned. Perhaps it's living among the unprincipled that does it. Porritt now tells greens that they are too negative. They are too depressing, too antibusiness and too "dowdy".

Man, the greens are depressing because there's some fucking depressing news. We're up shit creek, Johnny. And business have taken the paddle and sold it for matchwood.

We are not discussing any more whether global warming poses a threat to us. We are discussing whether we've reached the point of no return. Yes, you'd have more influence with the Blairs of this world if you told them what they wanted to hear, but while it may comfort them to hear that there's a bright future, there won't be one unless they take note, and do it now.

Porritt's book argues that capitalism 'is now the only economic game in town' and all sides must find ways of making free markets deliver a more sustainable future.

Porritt, there's the door. You're an idiot. The "markets" will only deliver wealth to the wealthy. That's what they're for. Governments are what we have to stop them, in their pursuit of wealth, from wrecking the place. When even our own side is telling us that we should just let the fuckers get on with it, you start to realise that it really is going to be over for us, and soon.
